Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat ReviewIf you were to look at the Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat in complete isolation from other competing products on the market today you might think that it was an advanced thermostat with a ton of great features, and it is, but it is lacking in some areas which its competitors have used to raise the bar. You don’t have room by room controls with this thermostat and there’s very little room for customization beyond changing the background color of your screen. It does have a Wi-Fi connection and it can be controlled remotely which is certainly positive, but it does have to be hardwired to your home for power using a common wire which some will find disappointing.

What I do really like about this thermostat is that it has built-in energy-saving functions that you can control depending upon the time of year to save you money and consumption costs. It’s also compatible with Alexa, a service provided by Amazon which allows you to control the thermostat using only your voice. Overall it is a nice thermostat and it’s certainly an upgrade from a typical thermostat found in any home that’s more than three or four years old – it’s just that there are some better products out there in the same price range.

Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat Review

Design

Color Touchscreen: Thermostats are becoming an important part of the new Smart home and this particular model by Honeywell fits right in in with any automated home. It features a comparatively large color touchscreen display that’s easy on the eyes and allows you to change the background color as you see fit. You can choose from just about any color you can think of using its built-in spectrum controls so you should have no problem finding a background that matches your own decor

Large Display: Some thermostats have very small displays that are packed full of information which makes them difficult to read. The Smart thermostat by Honeywell has a decent sized screen which is comparable to most smart phones. This doesn’t have anywhere near the functionality of your iPhone or Samsung Galaxy, but its display looks almost as nice. For someone like me that doesn’t have the best eyesight in the world a large display like this is an important feature.

Nice Layout: What I really like about this thermostat and its display is the way everything is laid out. There are essentially three sections on the main screen. The first section displays the time, the outdoor temperature and humidity, and the status of your thermostat – whether it’s in heating or cooling mode. The second section displays the indoor temperature and humidity and let you know if the thermostat is following a particular schedule at that point in time. In the final section on the right-hand side you’ll find the controls to manually adjust your temperature up or down. It’s all very neatly laid out and the font size is nice and large so that almost anyone can comfortably read the display.

Usability

Remote Access: As is the case with many smart thermostats today this model by Honeywell can connect via Wi-Fi so that you can use it remotely to control the temperature of your home. There are apps available for both IOS and Android and these apps are quite user-friendly. You can also control the thermostat using your PC and of course manually using the thermostats touchscreen control settings.

Voice Control: If you’re at home and you like the idea of being able to control your thermostat without getting up off the couch you’ll be pleased to know that this model is compatible with Alexa – Amazon’s answer for Siri. As long as you have an Amazon Echo device in your home you can use Alexa to access the controls of your thermostat and turn up the temperature while you’re watching the big game without having to get from your chair. It can’t get up and get a bag of chips for you though – at least not yet.

Fully Programmable Energy Saving Modes: You have a lot of options when it comes to controlling the settings of this thermostat. It has built in energy-saving programmable modes that allow you to modify your heating and cooling settings depending upon the time of the day and whether or not your home. There’s no need to have the heat going full blast when you’re covered up in your blankets with a big thick duvet at night. This is a great time to have a thermostat that can automatically adjust the temperatures down while you sleep allowing you to save energy – it will make for a lot more comfortable sleep knowing that you’re saving money in the process.

Performance

Learns Your Heating/Cooling Cycles: The reason this is called a smart thermostat is because it actually learns your heating and cooling cycles over time. As long as you allow it to, it can automatically adjust those settings based on your typical schedule and what you’ve set it to in the past. Essentially, once you’ve been using this thermostat for a while you’ll be able to let it do its job without really thinking about it. The thermostat will continue to save you money and you can go about your daily life without worrying about it.

Auto Alerts: A nice feature of this model by Honeywell is the inclusion of something called auto alerts. If there is an extreme Heat warning outside and your thermostat detects the temperature and humidity in your home is climbing it can send an auto alert to your phone, or email, to let you know that you might want to consider turning the air conditioner on if it’s off. Instead of coming home to a nasty surprise you can be walking into a beautifully cooled environment and sitting down to a nice supper without sweating.

Accurate Temperature Sensors: A common problem with traditional thermostats which you may or may not be aware of is that they are not extremely accurate. Most of them are programmed to operate within a 2 to 3° range which means you may have the temperature set at 72 and your home may be reading that temperature, but in reality the temperature in your home could be 75. As long as the temperature is no more than 2 to 3° outside of the range that you have it set at the thermostat feels it’s done its job, but you probably won’t agree. Unfortunately, you can’t argue with a thermostat so you’re bound to be disappointed. The temperature sensors in this Honeywell thermostat are much more accurate and dependable operating within a 1° range, which will make your home a lot more comfortable.
