The August Smart Lock is one of the best smart locks on the market. It has a sleek modern look and is designed to be attached to the inside of your door so it’s rather unobtrusive. If you’re worried about hackers taking control of your door lock this feature will reduce the possibility of that type of attack – out of sight out of mind. It’s a lock that is packed full of features and one that really is designed to make your life easier. It’s the perfect addition to any couch potatoes technological gadget list. It’s also quite easy to install as it shouldn’t take you much more than a few minutes.
I was particularly pleased to find out that it now comes with the HomeKit, which is designed to automatically unlock your door as you approach your home. Unfortunately, this feature is only currently designed to work with Apple products, although the manufacturer does claim that they’re working on an Android app. It seems a little strange that this type of compatibility wouldn’t have been available right from the launch of the product, but if you’re an Apple user you will simply love this lock.
August Smart Lock is full of useful features to make controlling access to your home a breeze.
Sleek and Modern: The August Smart lock has a sleek modern looking design that most people will find quite appealing. It’s dark grey color will match almost any home decor without looking out of place. It would be nice to see a range of different colors on offer, but I suppose if they have to choose just one this one works as good as any other. It will seem a little bulky when you take it out of the package and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Personally, I think it’s reassuring to know that an advanced locking system that’s going to be protecting my home has some substance to it – that type of thinking may be just psychological, but it’s a natural human reaction.
Unobtrusive: One thing I really liked about this system was the fact that it’s completely unobtrusive. You don’t have to worry about unwanted visitors knowing that you’ve installed a high-tech locking system as it attaches to the inside of your home. A major concern with any technology that can be connected via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi is that it has the potential to be hacked. That’s less of a concern if it looks like a normal lock on the outside.
Notification Light: If you’re at home it’s easy to tell when this lock is actually engaged as it will light up red to indicate that it’s locked and green to indicate that it’s unlocked. It’s a simple system that leaves no room for ambiguity. I think most of us would agree that these two colors are universally recognized indicators.
Virtual Keys: It might surprise you to know that the majority of smart lock manufacturers don’t allow you unlimited access to virtual Keys. Almost all of them allow you a certain allotment of keys and then you have to pay for each additional key after that. I don’t know about you, but this is a little mystifying to me as I’ve already bought the lock why on earth do I have to pay for extra access? That’s not a concern at all with the August Smart Lock as they allow you unlimited virtual Keys.
Easy Installation: There’s nothing more frustrating than a complicated installation process – I know I’ve installed quite a few things that made me want to throw my tools across a room and there are a lot of smart locks out there that will put you in that type of mindset as they require you to totally replace your existing lock mechanism. The August Smart Lock works with your existing lock so you only have to replace the thumb turn on the inside of the door. The whole installation process will take you all of about 15 minutes.
Smart Phone Controlled: Everything you do with this lock is controlled by your smart phone. It includes a very straightforward app that’s easy to manage and very easy to follow. They’ve made a real attempt to make your life as easy as possible and after all that is the idea with smart technology – it’s supposed to make our lives easier not more difficult. Unfortunately the lock currently only works with the iPhone.
Bluetooth Only: Perhaps the biggest flaw with this lock is that it’s based on Bluetooth only technology. That may seem fine, but Bluetooth has its limitations. For one thing its range is limited to about 30 to 35 feet and that means if you’re out in the backyard enjoying a little sunshine you may be too far from the front door to unlock it for a visitor. It would’ve been better if it was also compatible with Wi-Fi as this can have a much more extended range. The other problem with Bluetooth is that it can have a bit of a lag and that’s bound to be a little frustrating if you’re standing on your front door steps with some heavy grocery bags in your hand waiting to get in your home. Having said all that it’s not the end of the world, but it could have been handled better.
Limited Android Integration: There’s little doubt that this product has a bias towards Apple iPhone users. That’s not something I dreamt up – it’s simply a fact. Why do I think this? Well, with the August Smart Lock if you own an iPhone you can take advantage of the auto unlock feature, but this is not available to Android users. That means if you’re an Android user you have to dig out your phone, access the app, and allow yourself access to the home. Again, this may not be the end of the world, but it will be great once the company lives up to its promise of allowing this feature on Android devices as well.
Works Seamlessly with Apple Products: If you happen to own an Apple iPhone then you quite simply won’t have any complaints about this lock at all. As we’ve already indicated in our discussion of its Android integration above, with an iPhone you have access to the auto unlock feature which will automatically unlock your home when you get close because it recognizes your iPhone. The new version of August Smart Lock also comes with Apple’s home Kit which will allow you to, among other things, control your locks with Siri. You can ask Siri to unlock the door and you can also ask Siri to check if your doors are locked. It’s a pretty cool feature for all of the Apple gadget enthusiasts of their. It’s also compatible with the Apple watch.
