There are a lot of great smart thermostats on the market today, but most of them are fairly expensive. If you’re not too concerned with all the bells and whistles and you want a Smart thermostat that’s fairly versatile with some programming capabilities a good choice is the Honeywell Wi-Fi 7 Day Programmable Thermostat. This thermostat isn’t going to blow you away with a high tech color LCD screen, but it does have a lot of the features that you’ll find in other smart thermostats.
The screen may not be anything exciting to look at, but this thermostat still has Wi-Fi access so that you can control it remotely and you do have a lot of control over the programming. It won’t learn as it goes so it will only react to what you program it for, but it’s still a big improvement over the old fashion thermostats that simply reacted to the temperature where the thermostat was located.
The Honeywell Wi-Fi 7 Day Programmable Thermostat has some nice features that really extend the usability of the thermostat. Here’s a breakdown of those features.
Functional Design: The first thing you’ll notice when you have the Honeywell Wi-Fi 7 Day Programmable Thermostat installed is that it’s nothing fancy. It has a basic functional design that doesn’t look a lot different from a lot of other thermostats with the important exception being that it is Wi-Fi compatible. That Wi-Fi link really opens up the options for a thermostat and it’s probably the most attractive feature of this model aside from its price. Compared to other Smart thermostats with Wi-Fi it’s actually quite affordable.
Basic LED Screen: There’s no fancy color screen on this unit – just a basic two color LED display that would look right at home with some of the earliest portable video games that came out in the late 80s. I’m probably aging myself a little bit with that previous statement, but it’s true nonetheless. The backlight display is a basic green and the text is a simple black. You won’t be adding any wallpaper to the background of this thermostat and there aren’t a lot of fancy icons, but it does a very good job of controlling the temperature in your home which is really what it’s there for.
Intuitive Controls: The controls on this thermostat are easy to understand and don’t take a lot of time to figure out. Along the bottom you’ll see five options including: schedule, hold, clock, screen, and more. These are the main controls of your system and allow you to program all of its main features. You’ll also notice a column on the left-hand side that displays the setting for the fan such as auto or manual and another indicator that tells you whether the system is set to cool or heat. Finally, on the right-hand side are the controls to manually increase or decrease your temperature. It’s straightforward and easy to follow.
Simple Touchscreen Programming: There really isn’t a lot of learning curve when it comes to using this device as the controls are quite intuitive. It does use touchscreen technology, but you simply have to follow the on-screen prompts to program the thermostat to your desired temperatures. If you’re not quite sure how something works there are a ton of great videos available online that explain things and it also comes with a helpful user manual.
Remote Programming of the App: The main reason that this Honeywell thermostat is a little bit better than the average standard thermostat on the market is because it does have Wi-Fi capabilities. As long as you allow the thermostat access to your Wi-Fi network you can access the temperature controls using Honeywell’s app which is free to download from the IOS or Android App Store’s. There’s quite a lot of functionality in the app itself and you may actually find it more intuitive than using the manual controls on the thermostat.
Easy Step-By-Step Set up: Installing this thermostat is a pretty straightforward process, but you do need to keep in mind that it does need to be hardwired using the common wire. If you don’t know what I mean by a common wire there’s a good chance you may need some help in setting up this system so don’t be for afraid to ask for some. You’ll want to make sure that your thermostat is functioning properly and while almost everyone loves a DIY project if that’s not your thing you should probably leave it to a friend or professional. The thermostat comes with a helpful set of instructions in the package and they’re fairly straightforward to follow though, so if you want to give it a try it really isn’t that difficult.
No Learning Capabilities: This thermostat is meant to be programmed by you unlike some of the other popular smart thermostats out there, such as the nest learning thermostat, this particular model has no capability to learn your habits as it goes. It is customizable – it’s just that you have to do the work to set things up. Still, if you use it properly you can save yourself a lot of money using its seven day and four period programmability. You really have to decide if saving a fair bit of money is more important to you than a thermostat that can basically think for itself. If you want a thermostat with some great options and you’re not so concerned about its learning capabilities then this one is a good choice.
Compatible with All Systems: One area where this thermostat does beat most of its peers is in its universal compatibility. Many smart thermostats are only usable with modern high-efficiency furnaces and air conditioning systems that are fairly new. They’re not capable of adapting to older systems and that’s one big advantage of the Honeywell Wi-Fi 7 Day Programmable Thermostat as it’s almost universally compatible with all HVAC systems.
Accurate Temperature Control: Another reason you may want to consider upgrading to this Honeywell Wi-Fi thermostat is that its temperature controls are much more accurate than older thermostats which were only designed to maintain temperatures within a 2 to 3° range of what you were actually looking for. By choosing a thermostat like this that’s more accurate you can save yourself a lot of money on energy bills as it will shut off more quickly when not needed – that’s a huge advantage over that old thermostat in your grandmother’s house.
