The Honeywell Premium Portable Wireless Door Chime (RCWL300A1006 ) is an innovative piece of technology with a lot of great features that most people will like. Compared to some other high-tech doorbells it is somewhat limited as there is no camera to see your visitors and there is no audio connection to speak with them either, but when compared to your standard run-of-the-mill doorbells it’s definitely a step up. If you’re more concerned with having a doorbell you can take with you just about anywhere around the home and not have to worry about missing a visitor then this is the perfect choice for your home.
One really nice feature of the Honeywell Premium Portable Wireless Door Chime is that it does connect with compatible motion sensor technology so you can use it for home security as well. The base unit is designed to be connected to up to three different sources whether they be pushbutton doorbells, or some type of motion sensor. I guess the best way to describe this doorbell is to say that it’s an inexpensive security option if you’re on a limited budget, but if you don’t mind spending a little extra money I really do recommend upgrading to a video doorbell camera for added security. If you’re one of the lucky few that happens to live in a fully gated community you might not think any extra security is necessary, but I for one think taking advantage of some of the great unobtrusive security technology available for homes today is a great idea.
The Honeywell Premium Portable Wireless Door Chime comes with a lot of the standard features you’d expect in any doorbell, but it also comes with a few extra bells and whistles that serve to separate it from the pack. Here’s a breakdown of those features.
Sleek and Unobtrusive: The thing to remember about the Honeywell Premium Portable Wireless Door Chime is that it’s really made up of two separate parts. There’s the actual pushbutton part that you install on the outside of your home and that we’ll talk about that below, but there’s also a second part which is the mobile chime itself which you can take with you anywhere in your home – or even on your deck. The portability of this unit is one of its most attractive features and its sleek unobtrusive design will make it look right at home in any contemporary environment. You won’t have to worry about it ruining your decor as it will fit in just about anywhere. It’s also quite a small unit so it won’t stick out anyway no matter where you put it.
Subtle Color Transitions: Another great thing about the look of the base unit is the great use of colors. The main body is a metallic silver which will work quite well with your stainless steel appliances and this is divided by a black stripe which contains three indicator lights that the unit uses to communicate with you. These three little indicator lights are outlined in orange which make them easy to notice and that of course is the idea – especially if you have the volume turned down. Let’s say the kids are sleeping and you don’t want to disturb them, but you are expecting guests – you can simply turn the volume right down and just keep an eye and these indicators to notice when your guests arrive.
Push Button is Unimpressive: The one part of this unit that I didn’t like was the second part of the set up we’ve already mentioned – the pushbutton that goes on your front door. This little piece of equipment is rather awkward looking with a big square button in the middle that will definitely stand out like a sore thumb if you’re going for more of a classic look as it’s very modern. The button part itself is actually rubber which to me seems a little tacky.
Simple Volume Control: There’s no doubt that the volume control built into this unit is a great feature to have. You do have to slide down the front panel to access the volume control which is a little awkward, but on the other hand hiding the volume control behind this panel does make the design look nicer overall. As we’ve already mentioned if you’ve got someone sleeping in the home it’s nice to be able to turn the volume down if you’re expecting visitors.
Easy to Read Visual Alert Icons: The Honeywell Premium Portable Wireless Door Chime comes with three different visual alert icons which you can program separately yourself. For example, you might decide to have a one pushbutton at the front door, one pushbutton at the back door, and a motion sensor on your front door as well. You can program the three indicators to work for each one of your three different chosen features. There are also three different chimes so you could have a different sound for each function to easily distinguish them.
Quick Connections: If you’re not a fan of complicated electrical assembly then you’ll be really pleased with the Honeywell Premium Portable Wireless Door Chime. You do have the option of screwing the panel onto your front door frame for the pushbutton, but that’s not necessary. It also comes with double-sided adhesive tape so that you can simply stick it on if you prefer. The base unit, the pushbutton, and the optional motion sensors are all powered by simple batteries so there’s nothing to hardwire.
CD Quality Audio: The last thing you want in a door chime is a fuzzy irritating sound that will drive you crazy every time someone rings the doorbell. Fortunately, you don’t have to worry about that with the Honeywell Premium Portable Wireless Door Chime as it features full CD quality audio. Of course the tunes it plays are somewhat limited so it’s not about to replace your home stereo system, but it won’t sound like nails down a chalkboard every time someone rings the doorbell either.
Instant Connection: Perhaps the most important thing about a unit such as the Honeywell Premium Portable Wireless Door Chime is how quickly it responds when someone pushes the doorbell. I didn’t have any concerns in this regard as the lag time between the time when your visitor pushes the button and when the sound chimes to your base unit is virtually nonexistent.
Fully Programmable: One final point to mention that makes this particular door chime a step above your typical door bell is the fact that it’s fully programmable. There are three different alert indicators as we’ve mentioned above and you have full control over how these are programmed. You control which alert is connected to your pushbuttons and which ones are connected to your motion sensors – if you have any. You also have full control over the chimes each item uses. You are the master of this little box.
