august doorbell camera review

The August Doorbell Camera is one of those products that seems to start out with a lot of promise, but just comes up a little bit short. Don’t get me wrong I’m a big fan of the doorbell camera and high-tech smart home technology like this in general – it’s just that this particular product has far too many shortcomings to be considered a stand out in its field. It all starts out pretty well with a design that seems relatively appealing, although some might argue it’s a little boxy in appearance, but everything’s downhill from there. It’s missing some features that some of its competitors have such as the Ring Video Doorbell although it’s in the same price range.

The bottom line is that the August Doorbell Camera simply doesn’t deliver the user experience I was expecting. On a positive note it is supposed to be available in two different colors – silver and dark grey. It also features HD video so you should be able to see visitors on your doorstep clearly as long as there’s enough light in the background. August Doorbell Camera’s biggest selling point is its ability to easily integrate with other August products and be controlled all from the same application. Unfortunately this doorbell camera doesn’t include infrared technology so it’s simply not designed to work well at night. I don’t know about you, but my visitors don’t stay away just because it’s night time. This is a major shortcoming and design flaw that needs to be fixed if this product is ever to be taken seriously by most consumers. Additionally the choice to use Bluetooth to connect to the home internet raises eyebrows due to the limited range and associated security issues. At the time of this writing the August Doorbell Camera is also lacking a way to record visitors at your door, although they do claim that this option is coming in a future upgrade.

Design

Some Choice: One thing that really bothered me about the August Doorbell Camera was the fact that they lead you to believe there are four different available colors on their website which would make you think that you have a little more choice than you do. In fact, at this point in time the August Doorbell Camera is only available in silver and dark grey. This was a major disappointment for me after seeing the picture on their website that suggested it also came in a nice reddish tone as well as a copper tone, but when you go to order the doorbell from their website only the silver and dark grey colors are available for purchase. It may be that they’re working on making these other colors available in the near future, but at this point in time they’re not. It was kind of like being offered a winning lottery ticket only to have it taken away from you.

Sleek Look: While others may not agree I actually liked the physical design of the August Doorbell Camera. It’s got sleek lines and when a visitor physically presses the ,August Doorbell Doorbell button a small doorbell icon is illuminated in green – it’s a nice little effect that gives the doorbell some polish. The camera and speakers are also integrated nicely into the overall appearance – they’re not overstated in any way. If you’re visitors take a close look they’re going to notice the speaker and the camera on the unit, but it doesn’t look tacky attached your front door at all.

Usability

Instant Notifications: Where this smart little August Doorbell Camera does shine is in its use of your smart phone to provide you with instant notifications when someone rings your doorbell. The instant someone presses the doorbell a signal is sent via Bluetooth to your Wi-Fi router and ultimately to your smart phone – the whole process takes no more than a couple of seconds. You can then quickly access your doorbell’s camera and interact with your visitor via two-way audio.

Getting Started: Hooking the August Doorbell Camera up is a simple process that even the most technologically illiterate should be able to handle without much of a problem. They supply you with all the tools you need along with a great getting started manual that explains how to complete the process. You will want to make sure you turn off the power to your existing doorbell before getting started though as this model is designed to be wired directly in its place and uses the same power source. If you’re not comfortable with connecting wires you can always hire an electrician, but you’re bound to overpay for it and it really isn’t necessary.

Activated at the Touch of a Button: There’s nothing complicated about using the August Doorbell Camera once it’s hooked up properly. All your visitor needs to do is simply push the doorbell icon in the middle and the camera is activated. The doorbell’s built-in technology takes over after that by notifying you of the visitor at your door and allowing you to interact with them.

Compatible with August Door Lock: One major advantage of this doorbell camera is that it’s also compatible with the company’s August Door Lock system. That means you can use the August Doorbell Camera and speakers to interact with visitors at your door and you can also then allow them to remotely enter your home from within the same app. This level of integration is quite convenient and does give it an advantage over some of its competitors.

Performance

Bluetooth Technology Concerns: The August Doorbell utilizes Bluetooth technology to connect to your Wifi internet. The benefits of this are lower energy usage, which would be arguably unnecessary as it is a wired doorbell and connected directly to the power of the house. The downsides of using Bluetooth are the limited range and less secure connection, both of these present a huge problem due to the placement of the device outside the home.

No Motion Sensor Technology: Unfortunately this doorbell camera does not feature motion sensor technology so the only time the camera turns on is if a visitor actually pushes the doorbell. That may be fine in most instances, but if you’re thinking of using this camera as a security a camera as well it has obvious shortcomings.

The Video Quality is Disappointing: While this camera does feature 1080p HD quality video that doesn’t really matter if you can’t see the person on your doorstep. Unfortunately, this camera really runs into issues when there isn’t a lot of natural light behind the person standing on your doorstep. It doesn’t include any type of built-in night vision technology at all, so if you don’t put your porch light on at night you’re probably not going to be able to see too much using the camera from a remote location.
