Best Smart Toothbrush Review 2017

On this site we’re always looking for innovative smart technology that has the potential to change our lives. Some people may be afraid of the changes that technology brings, but we prefer to embrace it. These are exciting times and we believe that every new piece of smart technology introduced to the home makes our lives that much better. You might not think that such a profound statement should apply to toothbrushes as well, but there’s no reason that it shouldn’t. There are already quite a few competing products in this category and they offer some exciting features to make your mouth a little healthier.

What’s even more exciting about smart toothbrushes is that they’re fairly affordable. Price is often the sticking point when it comes to adopting smart technology, but that’s not as big a hurdle for smart toothbrushes. So what makes them smart toothbrushes? Well, these toothbrushes do more than just brush your teeth. They have built in pressure sensors, they have different speed settings, they include built-in timers, and, in most cases, they include an app that allows you to track your brushing habits and keep you posted as to where you need to improve.

Traditional toothbrushes don’t do enough to remove plaque, which is why end up having to visit the dentist. A smart toothbrush is much better at removing plaque, making those dental visits a lot less frequent. I’m not sure about you, but if I can find a toothbrush that can help me spend less time in the dentist chair then I’m in!

Some Key Features of Smart Toothbrushes:

  • Connector.

    The Two-Minute Timer

If you’ve spent any time at a dentist recently you were probably told to make sure you brush your teeth for two minutes every time you use a toothbrush. They probably also recommend dividing your mouth up into four quadrants and spending 30 seconds brushing in each one. This all sounds great in theory, but who actually times the amount of time they spend brushing their teeth? We all lead busy lives and we’re often hustling to get out the door so that we can get on with the day. Smart toothbrushes actually have built-in timers that notify you when you’ve brushed your teeth for the required two minutes – the better ones even have interval timers to let you know when you’re finished a quadrant so you can move on. This takes the guesswork out of how long you need to brush your teeth, as you simply have to wait for your cue from the brush.

  • Connector.

    Intelligent Pressure Sensor

Another thing that bothers dentists is when we put too much pressure on our gums while we brush. I think it’s human nature to believe that brushing as hard as possible must be better for our teeth and remove the most plaque, but this isn’t the case at all. It turns out if you put too much pressure on your gums as you brush you can actually do some damage. For most of us, it’s hard to know how much pressure is too much, but with a smart toothbrush you can find out exactly how much pressure you’re applying to your teeth. These innovative toothbrushes have built-in pressure sensors that can notify you when you’re applying too much pressure so that you can back off a little bit.

  • Connector.

    Rotation & Vibration

Electric toothbrushes have been around for years – in fact, they first made an appearance way back in the late 50s and early 60s. I mention this because some of you may be wondering why we’d want to do an article on such an old product. These smart brushes aren’t your father’s, or your grandfathers, old-fashioned electric toothbrush though. Those original ones were big and bulky metal contraptions that simply vibrated a little with the hope of removing a little extra plaque. Modern electric smart toothbrushes do a lot more. Some of them vibrate, some of them rotate, and some of them even oscillate. These days you actually have some control over how fast your brush is vibrating or rotating as well.

  • Connector.

    Different Modes

All mouths are not created equal – at least not when it comes to your teeth. Some of us have sensitive teeth, some of us have sensitive gums, and others don’t worry about these things at all. The point is one toothbrush does not fit all. Smart toothbrushes have been designed with this fact in mind. They come equipped with several different mode settings such as: whitening mode, gum care mode, sensitive mode, and some even have a setting for brushing your tongue. It’s really quite amazing the level of control you can achieve over your dental hygiene by simply switching to a smart toothbrush.

  • Connector.

    Software Application

There are even kid’s versions of the smart toothbrush, which turn the app into a brushing game, making the process much more enjoyable for the child. It’s a safe bet to suggest that kids will be more likely to brush their teeth if they get to play a game while they do it. It can certainly eliminate many arguments and parents can keep a close eye on how their kids are doing using the app as well.

  • Connector.

    Changeable Heads

Smart toothbrushes usually come with a variety of different heads as well. As we’ve already mentioned earlier everyone’s teeth are different and that means the approach to brushing has to be different for each person. With that in mind, these toothbrushes allow you to change heads to a toothbrush head that suits you. Some of them have round heads, some of them have long heads, and some of them even come equipped with power tip heads that allow you to dig right in to the hard to reach areas.

  • Connector.

    UV Sanitizing

Our mouths are full of bacteria and every time we brush those germs end up on our toothbrush. Most of us simply give our toothbrush a quick rinse and think that will take care of the problem. It turns out that quick rinse doesn’t do much at all. Smart tooth manufacturers have come up with a solution for that as well. The top models include UV brush heads that are self-sanitizing. These special heads actually kill more than 90% of the bacteria on your toothbrush so that they’re not around to cause problems for your mouth next time you brush.

Best Smart Toothbrushes Reviewed

At this point, you probably have a good idea of what a smart toothbrush is all about. They really are a great tool to help improve your dental hygiene, but there are a few different models available. In the rest of this article we look at some of the best choices available and breakdown their key features for you. This might not be an all-inclusive list, but it is what you might call a best of list. There are both adult toothbrushes and kids toothbrushes on this list, so for the parents out there you’ll find some great advice on products for both you and your child.

Features

The Oral-B Pro 7000 is a brush packed full of features. If you remember way back in the beginning of this article we talked about some key features that you might find in smart toothbrushes and this one has them all. It has the built-in timer with the interval option, it has pressure sensors to let you know when you’re pushing too hard and you can even track this in the app, it also vibrates and rotates to remove plaque, it connects with a companion app, it has several different brush modes, and it has different brush heads. The only thing it doesn’t have is a built-in UV sanitizing feature, which is the only reason it doesn’t score 10 out of 10.

Design

You don’t buy a toothbrush because of its looks, but this Oral-B smart toothbrush will look good sitting next to your bathroom sink. It is available in different colors and I particularly like the sleek black one. All of the various indicators are backlit so you can see any information you need easily – even in low light. It also comes with a separate LED timer that you can use for tracking the intervals while you’re brushing instead of using the app if that doesn’t interest you. The only thing I really didn’t like about its design is the fact that it’s charging station needs a wall plug nearby when it’s time to recharge. In today’s modern world a USB charging option would seem like a better idea.

Usability

Oral-B has made it easy to use this brush. When the brush is fully charged you simply push the power on button located on the front of the handle to get started. Below the power button is another button that allows you to toggle through the different modes. Underneath that is a Bluetooth indicator and a battery charge level indicator so that you have everything you need all in one place. Changing brush heads is simple as you just turn and click it into place and using the companion interval timer is just as simple. This timer features a circle divided into four quadrants and when the timer begins it moves through the quadrants clockwise making it easy for you to see when it’s time to move to a different part of your mouth. They’ve thought of just about everything and the whole package works nicely.

Performance

The brushing power of this smart toothbrush is impressive. It works very well and the oscillating feature can really leave your mouth feeling refreshed. There have been a couple of complaints about the power of the brush actually being a bit too much, but this seems a bit unfair to me as there are different settings you can choose from – if you don’t like one you can simply switch to another. Overall, it’s a great brush that performs well.

Philips Sonicare Flexcare Platinum

The Philips Sonicare Flexcare Platinum may be the most complete toothbrush on this list. Not only does it include all of the features that we’ve highlighted in this article, including the UV sanitation feature, it also comes with a few extras. The companion app doesn’t just collect data and provide you with some information, it actually interacts with you as you brush your teeth. The app includes an animated picture of your mouth that lets you know when it’s time to move to the next section. It can even give you extra time on a certain section if it needs a little more work. This app can let you know when it’s time to change your brush head as well.

Design

The brush itself normally comes in a traditional white color and while it’s handle may seem a little bulky that’s because of the extra room required for the battery in one of these brushes. All of the main features are accessible on the front panel of your toothbrush and it has light indicators that let you know which particular brushing mode you’re using. The bottom of the brush is flat so that you can stand it straight up when it’s not being used if you don’t want to sit it in it’s charging station.

Usability

There isn’t much of a learning curve when it comes to figuring this brush out. Likely, the most difficult thing is connecting it to the app for the first time, but once you’ve done it once it will become second nature. To use any of the features on the main panel you simply press the button. There are even plus and minus buttons that allow you to change the speed of the brush head.

Performance

The brush itself works great. The brushing modes are noticeably different and you can easily adjust the speed and pressure of the brush so that it’s right for you. If there’s any complaint about this smart toothbrush it’s that the app itself has a tendency to crash from time to time. It’s not something that happens frequently, nor does it happen to everyone, but it would be nice to see them remove the glitches in an upgrade.

Kolibree Smart Toothbrush

7.0

Features

The unique thing about the Kolibree smart toothbrush is that it’s designed with both adults and children in mind. The idea behind this toothbrush was to create a better way to encourage kids to love brushing their teeth. They’ve achieved this by connecting to an app that turns brushing teeth into a game for your children. When they brush for the right amount of time, and with the right amount of pressure, they’re rewarded by collecting badges and level ups. Instead of two minute seeming like an eternity for your kids, they’ll be fully engaged the whole time. This toothbrush also has some great features for adults as well, including a virtual coach that will guide you to improve your brushing habits.

Design

This is a well-designed brush with a nice thin handle for an electric toothbrush. It has a tapered head that makes it look less bulky than other models. The Kolibree may not have quite as many features as some of the more expensive products we review on this site, but it’s still a big step up from a manual toothbrush. The only button you’ll see on the front of this toothbrush is the power button and an indicator light that let you know how much charge you have left.

Usability

As there aren’t a lot of buttons on this brush, it really couldn’t be much easier to use. In fact, most of the features are provided from the app itself. Once you figure the app out, you’ve pretty much figured out the brush – it’s not difficult at all. It’s likely that they’ve made it so easy to use because it’s meant to be used by both children and adults.

Performance

Overall, the brush does a nice job. It works well and provides the right amount of pressure, but there is a bit of a problem with the Bluetooth connection on occasion. Some customers have complained about losing contact with their app in mid brush and having to finish up the old-fashioned way. It might not be the end of the world, but it would be a good idea if they fix this minor flaw in the next version.

Grush The Gaming Toothbrush

8.0

Features

Grush The Gaming Toothbrush is another smart toothbrush that’s been designed with kids in mind. In fact, this one is meant to be exclusively used by children. It doesn’t have a lot of fancy features such as different modes or UV sanitation, but it does have a great app that turns brushing your kid’s teeth into a game that they’ll love. The game actually rewards them if they’re doing a good job of brushing the different sectors of their teeth. It connects to the app using Bluetooth and parents can also use the app to track their children’s brushing habits.

Design

This brush has a smaller handle than other smart toothbrushes that makes it easier for your child to grip and it’s ergonomically designed to be comfortable in their little hands. Your kids will also probably like the multicoloured design of the brush and the colourful Grush logo at the bottom. To make things simple they’ve made the button that activates the brush nice and big so that your child can easily find it.

Usability

The most difficult thing about using this brush is connecting it to the Bluetooth app so it’s probably a good idea to let mom or dad do this. Once that’s out of the way though using the brush is quite easy for your child as there is only one button to powers it on and off. With the app open, your child can simply follow along with the on screen instructions and have a little fun in the process.

Performance

This is a great little toothbrush for kids. It keeps things simple with an on an off button being it’s only feature, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. By all accounts, it operates at a nice speed and it doesn’t apply too much pressure to your children’s mouths. The app is great and it even provides colour-coded feedback to indicate how well your kids are doing – green for great, yellow for good, and read for needs a little improvement.

Braun Triumph Professional Care 9900 Series

Features

Usability

Design

Performance
8.0

Features

The Braun Triumph Professional Care 9900 toothbrush is another great choice when it comes to smart toothbrushes. This one doesn’t connect to an app, but it provides you with the same features as other smart toothbrushes using its innovative Smart guide. The Smart guide is a small wireless display that provides feedback as you brush and helps to track how long you’ve been brushing your teeth. For some people this innovative little display may be better than using an app, as you don’t have to worry about accidentally getting your phone wet while you brush.

Design

If there’s one little complaint I have about this smart toothbrush it has to do with the design. You can access all of the features that it has easily using the front panel like on most other smart toothbrushes, but the problem is that the handle is so large that you might find yourself accidentally activating a feature. It might not be a major problem for people with large hands, but if you’ve got smaller hands you may have some difficulties.

Usability

This brush is easy to use with all of the features easily accessible on the handle of the brush and it even has a nice large battery indicator at the bottom. Changing brush heads is fairly straightforward as you simply place the new brush head on top of the handle and turn it until clicks. Since you don’t have to worry about downloading an app, there isn’t much to the setup process. The brush is automatically synced with the Smart guide and it’s simply a matter of making sure it’s charged and ready to go.

Performance

By all accounts this brush does a nice job of cleaning your teeth, but the biggest complaint about it has to do with the battery. Some customers have indicated that it doesn’t hold its charge very well and one or two isolated customers have even gone as far as to say that it won’t charge at all after a few months of use. This doesn’t seem to be an issue that’s affected most customers though and overall it seems a pretty good choice if you’d like access to some smart features without having to connect it to your smart phone.

A Brighter Clean

If you’re not satisfied with your current toothbrush then a smart toothbrush really is the way to go. With the ability to adjust your brush depending upon the sensitivity of your teeth, and the fact that most of these toothbrushes can let you know when you’re brushing too hard, it really is a big step up. What makes them special though is the valuable feedback that you can get by connecting it to an app or a Smart guide. It wouldn’t surprise me if these toothbrushes find their way into the majority of homes in the next few years.
